These FAQs (Frequently
Asked Questions) reflect the kinds of questions asked on the League of
Women Voters voice mail. The answers were adapted from the ABCs of Voting,
a publication of the Citizen Education Foundation, a 501.c.3 affiliate
of the League of Women Voters of North Carolina with review and assistance
from the Guilford County Board
of Elections. Information about voting in Forsyth
County is available on-line.

| Who May Register to Vote? | A citizen of the United States: native-born or naturalized (if convicted of a felony, citizenship rights must have been restored) who is: At least 18 years old by the date of the next general election and A legal resident of Guilford County 30 days by the date of the next election. |
| When are the elections in 2004? | The General Election is Tuesday, November 2, 2004. |
| How do I know if I need to register? | You need to register or re-register if: You have never registered in Guilford County or You have had your Guilford County registration cancelled because you have moved out of Guilford County or You have ever been convicted of a felony. | How may I register to vote? |
Complete a voter registration form.If mailed, the registration form must be postmarked by Friday, Oct. 8.If hand-delivered to the Elections Office, the registration form must be received no later than 5:00PM on Friday, Oct. 8. |
| Where do I get a registration form? | Call the Board of Elections (373-3836) or visit either office: 301 West Market Street, Room 113, Greensboro and 505 East Green Drive, Room 103, High Point. You may also register at the Department of Motor Vehicles when you apply for or renew your driver's license. Branches of the Greensboro Public Library, the High Point Public Library, and the Jamestown public library have mail-in forms. Public Assistance agencies, such as the Department of Social Services. Employment Securities Commission. Mental Health, Guilford County Health Department all have forms. Call any of the above for hours or use the web site if indicated. |
| What if I am not in Guilford County, but want to vote? | If you or your spouse are in the armed forces or Peace Corps, you may register and vote by mail. Certain military personnel and civilians may also register and vote by mail. Contact the Board of Elections, P.O. Box 3427, Greensboro, NC 27402, 336-373-3836. |
| Must I contact the Board of Elections if I want to change my registration information? |
You must update your voter registration record if

You may change your address, name or party by filling out the back of your voter information card and returning it to the Elections Office or filling out a mail-in registration form. This information must be received by registration deadlines for elections. |
| Democrat, Republican, independent or ?? |
When you register, you may declare your officially recognized party affiliation.Or you may declare yourself unaffiliated. In this case you will not be able to vote in a party's primary unless that party opens its primary to unaffiliated voters. You may vote for bonds or referenda and on non-partisan races. Everyone votes in a general election. |
| I am 17, but will be 18 by November 5 so what about me? |
17 year old persons may register to vote as long as you will be 18 by November 3, 2004. You may register by Friday, October 8 at 5 p.m. for the general election.You may vote for candidates in the primary, but not for referenda, bond issues etc. |
| Where do I vote? |
After you register, the Board of Elections will assign you a voting place within the precinct in which you live.To learn where you vote or which districts you are in, check your voter registration card which you is mailed to you after you register or call the Board of Elections (641-3836). |
| What time may I vote on election day? |
The polls are open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. |
| I am disabled. How may I vote? |
You may vote by absentee ballot. Please call the Absentee Department, 333-6874 or 333-6876, for assistance in applying for an absentee ballot.You may use Curbside Voting from your car at your assigned precinct on election day or during early voting from an Early Voting location. You need to have another person when you vote from your car. That person will go into the Polling Place and speak to the Chief Judge about your need. |
| I won't be in town on primary election day so how do I vote? |
Early Voting by mail begins on Sept. 13. Early Voting in person begins on Oct. 14. See the Guilford County Board of Elections for details.In addition, you may request an absentee ballot if you are registered, but will be absent from the county on election day. You or a near relative may complete an application from the Board of Election's office or you may send a letter of request. Please call the Absentee Department for instructions at 641-6874 or 641-6876. |
| Is there any way to request an absentee ballot and vote in the same trip to the Board of Elections? |
You may appear at the Board of elections between the day after the registration deadline and 5 p.m. on the Friday before the Tuesday election and apply and vote at the same time. |
