Speakers for Civics 104

March 11

Jonathan Oberlander, PhD

Jonathan Oberlander, PhD, will be the first speaker in the Civics 104 series. Oberlander will address how the flow of money through the system influences health care decisions and policies.

Dr. Oberlander is well known for his work in health policy and for comparing various strategies for factors affecting the demand for health care reform.  He has written a lead article on this subject for the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine (Oct. 25, 2007) and has been a recent and returning guest on the National Public Radio (NPR) show Fresh Air hosted by Terri Gross.  In describing his talk for the series, Dr. Oberlander states that he “will provide an overview of the health care system (sources of insurance, the uninsured, cost control) and then discuss the politics of health reform as we head into the fall election.”

Dr. Oberlander is Associate Professor of Health Policy and Administration in the School of Public Health and Associate Professor of Social Medicine in the School of Medicine, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Dr. Oberlander’s research interests include Medicare and Medicaid, aging and public policy, health care reform, health politics and policy and American politics and public policy.
