A Message for Dr. Mark Sills, Executive Director of Faith Action International House:

Please take a moment to read the attached article from the Christian Science Monitor.  This is information everyone needs to know.  We are fighting not only to reform immigration, for justice, for mercy....but also to protect fundamental American values of freedom and privacy that will surely be destroyed if this kind of proposal moves forward.

Get Involved in Greensboro’s Budget Process

The City of Greensboro District Council members are holding meetings to seek input on the 2010-11 Budget.  YOU CAN BE INVOLVED WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR HOME!   Just go on line and fill out the form provided.  There are three questions:

  1. What do you consider to be the most essential services the City provides?

  2. Which services could be reduced with the least impact on the community?

  3. What programs and/or services would you like the City to consider adding in the future?

YOU HAVE UNTIL MARCH 15 TO COMPLETE THE SURVEY.

If you are unsure what programs you consider important, as one (Willie Taylor) involved in the Greensboro Public Library, I would like to make you aware that the Library lost 8 of the 13 positions cut last year and two in the year before.  None of these positions has been restored.  The Library is open 12 hours a day, M-F, 9 hours on Saturday and 4 hours on Sunday afternoon.  Additionally for every $1 taxpayers invest in the Library, we get a $5.64 return.

Each of us is aware of a service worthy of support.  Submit your responses immediately.  Make your voice heard.

Sunshine Day Celebration to feature investigative journalism, the City of Greensboro's new internal response to public records requests and Nina Totenberg

The state's celebration of open government is scheduled for Tuesday, March 16th in Greensboro at the newly opened International Civil Rights Center and Museum.  The afternoon will feature the importance of open government in the work of investigative journalism.   The City of Greensboro will showcase its revamped and aggressive response to public records requests. We will also hear a summary of recent legislative and legal issues involving the state's open government laws.  The day ends with a keynote by NPR's Nina Totenberg.  Click here <http://www.elon.edu/docs/e-web/academics/communications/ncopengov/sunshineday2010agenda.pdf> to see the full agenda.

The Sunshine Day event also marks the final countdown in the North Carolina Open Government Coalition's efforts to meet a Knight Foundation challenge grant for $250,000.  So far believers in the importance of a vibrant open government center in the state have pledged $201,000.  We are $49,000 away from our goal.  Please consider a gift to open government and make a pledge when you register for Sunshine Day in North Carolina.
