The series begins with a presentation by Dr. Jon Oberlander, UNC-CH School of Medicine.  Dr. Oberlander will describe how health care dollars are spent in our current system.  Participants will gain an understanding of how the flow of money through the system influences health care decisions and policies.

II  Addiction, Mental Health and Mental Health Reform- March 25

This session will cover what is happening in the care of individuals with addiction and mental illness and how mental health reform in NC has impacted access to care.  Clips from a documentary and presentations by Dr. Masoud Hejazi, a Greensboro psychiatrist and Robin Huffman, a long time patient advocate, will enable participants to understand the most important issues associated with addiction and mental illness.

III  Your Health Care:  Who’s the Decider? - April 22, 2008

Facilitator Bob Newton with nationally known speakers Dr. Ed Weisbart and North Carolinian Dr. Pam Silberman will discuss recent developments in health care delivery:

  • New roles and players in health care delivery

  • Consumer driven care and the effects of direct-to-the-consumer advertising

  • Expansion of public programs

At the end of this session, participants will have the tools to identify the reforms most likely to create positive change.

IV  Determinants of Health:  Is it ME or is it WE? - May 13, 2008

The concluding session in the series will begin with a presentation by Dr. Robert Strack, UNC Greensboro Department of Public Health.  He will provide an interesting twist to the notion that personal responsibility is the solution to common health problems.  A follow-up conversation with a panel of experts will be moderated by Jeri Rowe of the News & Record.  The session will address specific ways to stay healthy, and will explain why some are particularly vulnerable to the effects of unhealthy environments.
